Travel South Africa on your own

Many visitors of South Africa prefer to travel on their own rather than joining an organized group.  If you are one of them, you might find it useful to read upon some suggested itineraries which, we believe, will take you to the most amazing places that South Africa has to offer.  If you travel on your own, be careful and follow the safety precautions described in the Safety section of this web. Cape Town - Garden Route - Addo Elephant National Park - 10 days

If you have only 10 days in South Africa, we recommend to spend 3 days in Cape Town and the remaining week on the Garden Route completed by visiting the Addo Elephant National Park.

Suggested itinerary:

Day 1: Hike up the Table Mountain (1 086 meters)

Day 2: Cape Point. Boulder's Beach, Simon's Town and Chapman's Peak Drive

Day 3: Clifton, Camp's Bay, Llundadno Beach, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, hike up Lion's Head to watch the sunset

Day 4: Hermanus - whale watching, Gaansbai - Great White Sharks, Cape Agulhas - most southern tip of Africa, sleeping in Swellendam.

Day 5: Knysna, Plettenburg Bay, Tsisikama National Park. Sleep by Port Elisabeth.

Day 6: Addo Elephant National Park - safari, slreping in Addo.

Day 7: Addo Elephant National Park - safari, sleeping in Addo.

Day 8: Addo Elephant National Park - safari, check out v 11:00, sleeping in the Garden Route National Park.

Day 9: Return along Route 62 - the longest wine route in the world stretching across Little Karoo to Cape Town. Stop in George and visit the ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn.

Day 10: Visit Cango Caves and, if time permits, do a wine tasting at a winery in Stellenbosch of Franschhoek, ten back to Cape Town.

 

Cape Town - Garden Route - Drakensberg - Krueger NP - Johannesburg - 19 days

If you have enough time, spend at least 19 days in South Africa.  You will start in Cape Town then carry on the Garden Route all the way to the Addo Elephant National Park followed by the inland transfer to Lesotho.  Make a hike in Drakensberg, then cross the Zululand to get to the Indian Ocean. Drive up along the coast to Sodwana Bay, ideal place for diving.  Quick stop in Swaziland and then reach Krueger National Park, the ultimate Safari experience you can get in South Africa. Spend at least 2 nights in Krueger, then drive to Joburg. If you have time left, make an overnight trip to Sun City to relax.

Day 1: Hike up the Table Mountain (1 086 meters), dinner at V&A Waterfront, drinks at Long Street

Day 2: Tour - Cape Point. Boulder's Beach, Simon's Town and Chapman's Peak Drive

Day 3: Clifton, Camp's Bay, Llundadno Beach, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, hike up Lion's Head to watch the sunset

Day 4: Hermanus - whale watching, Gaansbai - Great White Sharks, Cape Agulhas - most southern tip of Africa, sleeping in Swellendam.

Day 5: Knysna, Plettenburg Bay, Tsisikama National Park. Sleep by Port Elisabeth.

Days 6 - 7:   Addo Elephant National Park - safari. Check out at 11:00, drive all the way to Lesotho. 

Day 8:  Lesotho - kingdom in the clouds.

Day 8:  Drive along the Lesotho border, cross the Golden Gates National Park to Get to Drakensberg.

Day 9:  Whole day hike in Drakensberg.

Day 10:  Drive across Zululand to the Indian Ocean, then along the coast to St. Lucia. 

Day 11:  St. Lucia - hippos, crocodiles, abundant fauna and flora, transfer to Sodwana Bay.

Day 12:  Swaziland.

Day 13:  Transfer to Krueger National Park, afternoon safari.

Day 14:  Krueger National Park - safari.

Day 15:  Krueger National Park - safari.

Day 16:  Krueger National Park - safari in the morning, transfer to Johannesburg in the afternoon.

Day 17:  Drive to Sun City to relax, make a short drive in the adjacent Pilansberg National Park.

Day 18:  Enjoy Sun City and relax as long as you can, check out from the hotel and drive to Joburg.

Day 19:  Johannesburg, departure.

 

If you lose one day on your journey you can skip the last day Sun City and Pilansberg. You can reverse the journey, i.e. start in Johannesburg and finish in Cape Town if it suits you better.  Remember to make accommodation bookings in the national parks well in advance.
